If you want efficiency, let the excavator do what it does best and let it lift and position the head. Supply hydraulic power to the head via a separate engine and hydraulic system WITH A BIG COOLING SYSTEM. When you trash the mulcher hydraulics, at least you don't trash the entire excavator hydraulic system. I've been through this a few times.

There were 3 different 1816 models, the 1816, 1816B and C. The main differences I have found are the engine and drive clutch type. They use a clutch to engage/disengage the drive pumps. The pump for the loader is always running. The clutch was either centrifugal, manual (like mine) or electric.There all basically good if properly cared for. If its a 1816 or 1816B, you'll need to change the oil at about 25 hour intervals or more often if you expect the engine to last. The Tecumseh engine in these needs to run with a vacuum in the crank case so any leak can be harmful.

Not a direct match in either case but they provided instructions on what needed to be switched in my case and what needed to be modified to change from the Onan to Briggs and Stratton on the Toro. Edit: I had a Gehl 2500 skid steer at one time, sold it to a neighbor, he replaced the Onan with a similar Honda and was very satisfied. My brother in law and I are looking at skid steers and he will only buy a Case. I am not familiar with the model numbers but we are looking for one in the 80 HP range for around 20k or less.
