In my opinion the best Excavator on the market is Komatsu. I work for a large sewer and water contractor in the Chicago area and all our excavators are Komatsu. In my 16 years as an Operating Engineer I have operated every brand of excavator and I believe the komatsu is the best. The old Cat's were good but the Komatsu blows them away today.
Besides, most mini excavator brands are pretty darn good so it mostly becomes a Ford, Chevy, Dodge kind of thing. Best advice would be to narrow your definition on what you plan to do with it, weigh how important the dealer relationship is to you and demo all of the brands you narrow it down to. I am new to this forum and new to Mini Excavators. I have 0 experance with mini excavators. I have a 150+ acre Pc of property and looking to purchase a used Mini excavator for just personal use on my land which I narrowed down to I think a 5 ton size with rubber tracks with a enclosed cab. With heat and A/c and thumb. Here in Seattle, WA is a supplier called Summit Supply. We were going to buy OEM Takeuchi tracks, but the Dealer suggested. Summit. We have them on one of our mini excavators, and on a track loader. They fit fine, and seem to be good quality, and the price is very good.
New here and to earth moving equipment. I am looking for an excavator for my farm and would like you guys to weigh in on my questions. I am not too concerned with Make (brand) at this stage as I need to first narrow down my selection to size. I will list what I want to do and then my questions. I want to Clear fence line (large and small trees) I honestly don't comprehend any of the responses in this thread. I'm prolly buying a 3.5 ton excavator from cael for k cdn. Seems to be shortage of mini excavator in Canada. Could get vio305b for kcdn with 4000 hrs but very rusty. It's being sold by a dealer. Just imagine if that chinese excavator makes it here, opens up shop and sells the same sized equipment for 0,000 less then the competition!!!! Then add dealer support with parts on hand. They will make a killing and the other brands will have to seriously rethink their prices, which are way too expensive anyway.
I've got a case-cx37c, a LB 80X3, and a JD 160lc. We only put about a 1000k hours a year on the smaller stuff, and the 160 is a work horse doing 8-10 hr days 6 days a week. It doesn't have a hard job, but it doesn't stop all day. I like most name brand mini's other than wacker and bobcat. Allgood, I know this won't sway you towards the Cats but the entire excavator (all the way up to the 330 for US market[I believe]) is made in Japan at the Mitsubishi factory. Most small loaders and dozers are as well. From waht I heard Cat bought the Mitsubishi factory so that they could be allowed into the Japanese market.
