I have a Cat 287 xps with 4' mulching head on rent. I have a bunch of clearing work in front of me and not pleased with the Cat product and need some advice before purchasing my own machine. Things I am looking for: A nice finished product (need .
We run one very similar to that i think its an older model its mounted on an ASV rc100 with the forestry package. does a very good job for what its designed to do. one suggestion i would make is what ever you get make sure you or the manufacture puts a good ROPS/forestry type protection on it. as careful as you can be youll end up smackin in to another tree or snag . A wheel loader is the best for heighth, but the skid steer has it all over the wheel loader (CAT 910 in my case) for speed. I put 5' forks on my skid steer or CTL (Compact Track Loader) and it will walk all over in deep mud with a full load of hardwood logs. I would not get any other brand or make other than the aforementioned. The external cooler cost me about 4200 dollars and I installed it myself. I used a Loftness oil cooler and had to order it through Bobcat in Houston, as they were the closest Loftness dealer. If you get the skid steer setup with a mulcher, that will fix you up. You don't need that big of a machine, but you do need high flow auxiliary hydraulics. I disagree with northman on taking out a loan on this piece of gear. Many of the stump grinders made for skid steers are produced by Alitec. New Holland, Cat, John Deere just put their label on them. Bobcat's stump grinder is a little different. The unit is set at right angle to the cab, so visability is better. I do not know who makes their unit. I have an Alitec SG 20 for my JD.

The fastest way to clear land with a skid steer mulcher with larger trees mixed into the bunch would be to go and mow as much of the small stuff bypassing the larger. Then use a tree sheer to knock them over limb them and haul the big wood out. Come back with the mower and chew and groom whats left.
