The machine is a 1996 1300C. I do know that they were bought out by volvo in 2001 I believe. But as far as their durability and reliableness and general reputation, I have no idea. Keep in mind my uses are light.
That Scat Trac is largely unchanged as a Volvo. They have given it pilots and I think a Volvo engine. Other than that it is still a Scat Trac in Volvo colors. Which may explain why Volvo has a near zero penetration into the skid steer market.

If you move a lot of dirt, get a skid steer because it'll bury a tractor 3 ways to Sunday when it comes to moving large quantities of material. I have never run the CAT track machine. I ran a 190 and came away with the same impression you did. I would hate to have to make a living excavating with that machine. Another option would be a large wheeled skid steer (CASE 90 or 95XT, BOBCAT S300 or equivilent) with the Loegren tracks. This would give you the flexibility of running wheels or . I no longer do that type of work and am going to buy a new(er) skid steer with a cab. Anticipated uses are leveling, grading, spreading gravel, etc. Where I live now it is basically all farm land with no rocks for 100 miles and flat as a pancake.
