You fill the chain cases (again, this is different from the gear boxes) from the oil level plugs located low on the chain box covers between the tires on the outside of the skid loader. These plugs require a 3/8" square drive for removal. My Mechanic says it only takes 4 quarts of gear oil per side, book says 1.8 gal/ side. I believe Case recommends engine oil in the chain cases. Some may disagree, but as all that is really in there are three chains and half a dozen sprockets, I think any oil would be fine. Compared to the chain on a motorcycle they live a good life if you can keep the water out! Shock loads from show-off operators will do more damage than .

I’ve been working on our 97’ case 1840 skid steer - it has 3200hrs but has had very poor maintenance from previous mechanics. My initial problem was a very very bad hydraulic leak that resulted in removing the tandem hydraulic pump and all hydraulic hoses - the hoses were in very rough shape so got them rebuilt. If only changing the oil only one on each side need to be removed but on a "new to you machine" I would suggest checking the chain adjustments so all cover need to come off. In picture the red arrows point to the chain box drain plugs. The green arrows point to on the right side the hydraulic tank drain plug and on the left the fuel tank drain .

The right Chain Case was also contaminated with 5 ~ 6 gallons of rain water due to faulty Chain Covers and Cover Gaskets. This water had frozen solid and was covered with a 2-inch layer of thick gray emulsified oil. Chain failure was most likely due to the ice lock-up previous to operation. Service performed to date: I am brand new to skid steers and really any heavy equipment. We are in the Texas hill country and building a house and clearing our land. It's basically infested with mountain cedar (juniper). I saw a Case 1840 on craigslist from the local Asco dealer.
