Generally the engine will do 6,000 hours before it needs replacing. Even maintained, it will wear, but running engines are not stupidly expensive.Really hard to say, the pumps will last many thousands of hours. I have heard they last 10,0.I think it was around 1,500-2,000 hours is when a lot of commercial users get rid of their mac.

As the size of the skid steer increases the average hours will increase. Because, as the skid steer gets larger so do all of the components, pins and bushings, engine, drive chains, axles and steel thickness. I have seen the larger skid steers, JD . I've never seen one with that many hours in such a short time, but it's possible. Some of the big dairies around here have skids constantly pushing feed. There are only a few hours a day that there is not a skid steer running. If an outfit like that had a single machine to use and guys working in shifts, it's not beyond the realm of possibility. I'm sitting on a 94 Bobcat 753 with a Kubota diesel at 10,673 hours- Just replaced a hose -the worst hose to have to replace, in six hours and two hundred smackers. Not mentioning the beer- just the hose and oils and filters. I've got to keep it bit longer to get that money back. Proper pmcs and operational technique is the key. GeeVee

I've been in the market as well and having trouble finding a decent machine with low hours for a good price. I guess thats what everyone wants. Was at my local bobcat dealer today and couldn't believe the hours on their used stuff. I've been trying to stay in the 1500-2000 hrs range and they have bobcats around 4-5000 hours. I run johndeere. For 10 grand you need to rent. I just spent half that on tracks. And to the above post. I got 400 hrs on my last set of tracks. All depends on how much asphalt you are on. But remember this on owning a skid steer. Every time you get worked on. Plan on spending a few hundred dollars. If you rent it and it breaks they fix it.
Unless you have a natural aptitude for running skid steers I don't think you will "learn" the controls in a hour. Skids are a difficult machine to run for most and my hat goes off to all GOOD operators. 27000 sq. ft. is not that large of an area and ( we use a JD X748 with loader and 2 guys) normally would have that sod ready in about 5 hours.
Have you ever used a dingo or any other mini-skid? Granted they are not as quick as a regular skid but they have there applications. It is 100% quicker than a wheelbarrel. There is no way one man can load a wheelbarrel, transport it, dump it, and return faster than a mini-skid. Brought it ,000 Dec. 2000. Sell for around 9500 now. The only thing I had to do was replace the radiator and basic maintanance. Good skid steer for the $$. If I was to trade right now, New Holland LS180 would be the way I go.
