I used to run a backhoe attachment on a skid steer. I began looking for a used mini ex. I found an IHI 35J with a thumb for 16K. I bought it to test the skid steer/mini ex combo. I put several thousand hours on the IHI (great little machine) and was sold on the concept. Ask me how I know. The name of my business has been one of the issues have had to overcome. I spent the first 6 or so years doing skid steer work. I got the IHI which expanded my capability. However most knew me as the skid steer guy. Hindsight I would have been Acme excavation or something. I now am a skid steer guy with a 160 sized excavator.

Skid steers and CTLs are used for landscaping but fullsized trackloaders haven't been used for years. There are a few old trackloaders around but they are not used commecially. A dump truck is used to move material around a site even if its only a hundred feet your moving 12 yards at a time. I have regretted buying a mini skid steer But only because I should have bought a better one Stay away from older bobcat Mt 50s Get a 52 or a 55 Don't get any Mt 50 I really like the dingo Everything about dingo I like But we're a bobcat company So we're probsbly going to get an Mt 85 I think it's like 40 grand IHI- If you take your time, you'll find a deal that you'll be happy with. Sometimes you just have to wait a little, and get a little lucky too. I know time is limited with the new season around the corner (hopefully), but the worst thing you can do is purchase a machine that you'll regret buying. Is this your first skid? Do you have to have a CTL?
I'm trying to get on a skid steer, but until then, I'll have to stick with being a numbers-person (which really doesn't mean much anyhow). Dodge's point is a good one. Digging garages may necessitate a smaller machine; I know Bobcat offers an "inset wheel rim" option on their machines, and I am sure Cat does as well -- just with a different name.
